The Gap Between a Dream and a Decision

You're not stuck because you don't know what you want. You're stuck because you haven't made the actual decision yet.

Most people who feel 'stuck' already know what they want. What's missing isn't clarity, it's a decision, and the practical plan to back it up. This article explains why the gap between dreaming and deciding exists, what actually closes it (hint: not more overthinking) and how a structured coaching process can take you from 'one day' to an actual plan in 90 days.
There is a particular kind of exhaustion that has nothing to do with sleep. It's the exhaustion of having the same conversation with yourself for the tenth, fiftieth, hundredth time. Of lying awake running through the same 'what if I just...' scenario you've been running for months, sometimes years, and waking up in exactly the same place you fell asleep in. That's the gap. Not a lack of ideas. Not a lack of intelligence or ambition. A gap between the life you can picture clearly and the decision you haven't yet let yourself make.
What Is the Gap Between a Dream and a Decision?
The gap is the space where most of us live longer than we'd like to admit. It's the distance between 'I'd love to change careers, reduce my hours or do something completely different' and actually doing it. Inside that gap, you'll usually find hours and hours of overthinking, research, conversations with friends who mean well but have their own agendas, spreadsheets that never get finished and a running mental tally of every reason it isn't the right time yet. None of this is wasted but it doesn’t move you into a decision.
A dream stays a dream for as long as it remains optional. It becomes real the moment you commit resources (time, money, energy) to it and accept that the commitment might not work out perfectly. That's the difference; dreaming costs nothing, deciding costs something. Which is exactly why so many capable, thoughtful people stay in the gap rather than cross it.
Why You Feel Stuck Between Wanting Change and Making It Happen
If you've read anything I've written about feeling stuck in life, you'll know that being stuck is rarely about a lack of options. It's usually the opposite. You have too many half-formed options, all competing, none of them tested against what actually matters to you, so your brain does the sensible thing and defaults to the option that requires nothing of you right now: staying exactly where you are.
Add to that the very real practical questions; can you afford it, will it work, what will people think, so it's no wonder the gap feels less like a pause and more like a permanent state. You're not indecisive because something is wrong with you. You're indecisive because nobody has ever sat with you and helped you separate the noise from the actual decision underneath it.
The Sunday Night Feeling: When 'One Day' Starts to Sound Like Never

I hear a version of the same sentence from almost every coaching client I work with, usually somewhere in our first conversation. 'I've been thinking about this for so long, but...' And there's always a but. But what if it doesn’t work out? But what if I regret it? But now isn't the right time.
I know that Sunday evening feeling well, because I've had it myself. Sitting with a life that looked entirely reasonable from the outside and feeling that there is more to life. The frustrating thing about that feeling is that it doesn't go away just because you ignore it. It just gets a little louder each time another year passes and the 'one day' hasn't arrived, because 'one day' was never going to arrive on its own. It needed a decision behind it.
What I Learned the Day A Coach Changed My Life
I left a career in London media in 2012 and the decision to leave came out of a single coaching session. It was one conversation, with someone who was neutral, who had no agenda about what I should or shouldn't do with my life, and who simply helped me get honest about what I actually wanted rather than what I thought I should want.
What that session taught me wasn't 'quit your job'. It taught me that most of us already know, somewhere underneath all the opinions, what we want to do. What we don't have is a process for getting to it cleanly, and the confidence to trust what we find once we get there. I retrained. I took contract roles instead of permanent ones. I moved abroad and spent years building a working life I designed myself rather than one I'd simply inherited. None of it was tidy. All of it started with one decision I could easily have postponed for another year.
That's the piece nobody tells you about big life changes: they rarely start with certainty. They start with a decision made before the certainty arrives, and the certainty catches up later.
The Real Reasons People Put Off Life-Changing Decisions
In eleven years of coaching, I've noticed the same handful of reasons come up again and again, dressed slightly differently each time.
Fear of getting it wrong tops the list
Not wanting to seem ungrateful for a life that, on paper, looks perfectly fine.
The money question, which is rarely as simple as 'can I afford it' and is more often 'have I actually looked at the numbers, or am I just assuming the worst'
A belief that's rarely spoken aloud: the idea that wanting something different makes you selfish, or unrealistic, or simply not the kind of person who does that sort of thing.
If any of that sounds familiar, you're in good company, and you're not short of self-awareness. What's usually missing isn't insight. It's a structured way of working through the fear, the finances and the story you've been telling yourself, so that you can make a decision you actually trust rather than one you've talked yourself into or out of at 2am.
The Story You Keep Telling Yourself (and Why It's Not True)
Somewhere along the way, most of us pick up a story about who we are and what we're capable of, and we stop questioning it. 'I'm not the kind of person who makes big changes.' 'I've left it too late.' 'I should just be grateful.' These stories feel true because they're familiar, not because they're accurate, and there's a real difference between the two.
The people I work with are rarely short on evidence that they're capable of hard things. They've usually managed careers, raised children, run households and navigated more than they give themselves credit for. What they're missing isn't proof; it's permission, and a process that helps them see the evidence they already have rather than the negative narrative holding them back.
How a Life Coach Helps You Close the Gap and Take Action

This is where coaching earns its place, and where it differs from talking to your partner, your best friend or your parents, all of whom love you and all of whom, understandably, have their own opinions about what you should do. A coach isn't there to tell you what your life should look like. My job is to give you a neutral space to think properly, to challenge the thinking that's keeping you stuck, to help you explore your actual options rather than the few you've been circling for months, and to hold you accountable once you've decided.
If you've wondered whether you need a life coach or you're still not entirely sure what life coaching actually involves, the short version is this: it's structured support for the decision you're already trying to make on your own.
The Design Your Life Framework: A Practical Way to Move From Dream to Decision
This is exactly why I built Design Your Life, a structured 90-day 1:1 coaching programme designed to take you from stuck to a decision you genuinely believe in, and then into a clear, actionable plan. It works through six stages:
getting everything out of your head and identifying the direction worth exploring
understanding your values and the beliefs that have been keeping you stuck
exploring and testing your real options
getting practical about the money and resources behind your chosen direction
turning that decision into a specific plan with dates and next steps
capturing the evidence of what you've achieved so you can trust yourself to keep going
You'll build your own Life Design Blueprint as you go, a permanent, personal record of the process, so that when your brain inevitably tells you 'you can't do this', you have something in black and white that proves otherwise. If you'd like a sense of how this compares with designing a life you don't need to escape from, or you're wrestling with the procrastination that tends to guard the gap, those are worth a read too.
What It Actually Feels Like to Finally Decide
There's a relief that comes with deciding, one that's different from the relief of avoiding a decision a little longer. It's not that the fear disappears… it's that you stop spending your energy fighting yourself and start spending it moving forward. Clients often describe it as the noise in their head finally quietening down, not because the situation has become simpler, but because they're no longer arguing with themselves about which direction to go in.
That's the shift Design Your Life is built around: not certainty for its own sake, but a decision you can stand behind, backed by a plan specific enough that there's no ambiguity about what happens next.
You Don't Need to Have It All Figured Out to Start
If you're waiting to feel completely ready before you make a move, I'll point out that readiness tends to arrive after the decision, not before it. You don't need the whole path mapped out. You need the next honest conversation with yourself, ideally with someone in the room who isn't your partner, your parent or your best friend, and who can help you see more clearly than you can see alone.
I'm not a therapist and this isn't about endlessly analysing your past. It's about where you are now and where you want to go next, with someone who won't tell you what that should look like, but who will help you work it out for yourself.

It takes you through six structured stages, from getting unstuck through to a clear, actionable plan, supported throughout by 1:1 coaching and your own Life Design Blueprint workbook.
Who is the Design Your Life programme for?
It's for women who've been carrying an idea around for months or years, whether that's leaving a career, starting a business, reducing their hours, moving abroad or something else entirely, and who are ready for structured support to turn that idea into a decision and a plan, rather than continuing to think about it alone.
What do I actually get during the 90 days?
Ninety days of 1:1 coaching with me
Personalised Life Design Blueprint workbook
Practical tools for challenging limiting beliefs and procrastination
A structured process for working through the financial and practical reality of your decision,
Accountability throughout
Access to scheduled Parallel Play sessions to help you take action alongside other clients
How is this different from other coaching or from just talking to friends and family?
Friends and family love you, which means they usually have an agenda too, even with the best intentions. I offer a neutral space with no agenda of my own, along with eleven years of coaching experience and NLP training designed specifically to help you challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and make decisions you genuinely believe in.
Why is it called a 'founding beta' and what does that mean for price?
To launch the programme, I'm opening five founding beta places at a reduced investment of £550, covering the full 90 days, your Life Design Blueprint, accountability and Parallel Play access. Once the beta is complete, the programme will be refined and the price will rise to £1,500+, so founding places are genuinely limited.
Summary
The gap between a dream and a decision isn't a sign that something's wrong with you. It's a normal, human space that almost everyone gets stuck in, usually because they're trying to think their way out of it alone. What actually closes the gap isn't more research, more time or more certainty. It's a decision, tested properly against your values, your finances and your real life, followed by a plan specific enough to act on. That's the process Design Your Life is built to give you, and it's the same process that's changed the direction of my own life more than once.
