What Is a Life Coach and How Does Life Coaching Actually Work? (2026)

Updated: Apr 13

A certified life coach helps you get clear on what you want, break through what is holding you back and take real action toward a life that feels meaningful. Here is exactly what life coaching involves, what happens in a session and how to know if it is right for you.

Smiling woman and text: WHAT IS LIFE COACHING & HOW DOES LIFE COACHING WORK?

A life coach is a trained professional who helps you identify your goals, remove mental and behavioural blocks and create a clear plan to move forward. Sessions are conversational, focused and action-oriented. A good life coach does not tell you what to do; they help you discover what you already know, challenge your limiting beliefs and hold you accountable.

This article explains what a life coach does, how sessions work in practice, what the TGROW coaching method is and how you can start working with a life coach today.

What Is a Life Coach? The Definition That Actually Makes Sense

A life coach is a trained and certified professional who helps you perform at your personal best. They work with you to change the way you think and behave so you can reach your goals faster and with more confidence than you would alone.

Unlike therapy, which typically focuses on processing the past, life coaching is present and future-focused. It is about where you are now and where you want to be. A life coach is part strategist, part cheerleader and part truth-teller; someone who listens deeply, asks the right questions and helps you cut through the noise in your own head.

People seek out a life coach for all kinds of reasons. You might want to change career or leave a job that no longer fits. You might want to build the confidence to start your own business. You may want to stop the cycle of negative thinking or beat the fear that keeps you playing small. You might want to redesign your life entirely; to work differently, live differently or just feel more like yourself again. A skilled life coach can help with all of these.

What makes coaching so powerful is that it is not prescriptive. A good coach does not hand you a list of instructions and send you on your way. They help you understand yourself more clearly, identify what is genuinely getting in the way and build the inner tools you need to create lasting change.

How Does Life Coaching Work? The Process Explained

A woman in a floral top and jeans speaks in a group setting. Others listen attentively. The room has large windows and a calm atmosphere.

Life coaching takes place in one-to-one sessions, either in person or online via platforms like Google Meet or WhatsApp video. Group coaching programmes are also available for those who thrive in a community setting.

Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes, though longer sessions can be arranged where needed. Most coaches offer a free introductory call before any sessions begin. This is usually called a Discovery Call and it gives you the chance to share what you want to work on, get a feel for the coach's style and decide whether they are the right fit for you. It is a no-obligation conversation and it matters; the relationship between coach and client is central to the work.

Once you begin, sessions are structured but responsive. A good coach always meets you where you are on that particular day. The content of each session will shift depending on what is most pressing, what has happened since you last spoke and what needs to happen next.

Between sessions, you will typically be given actions to take; things to try, habits to build or perspectives to explore. Many clients find that the work they do between sessions is where much of the transformation actually happens.

What Happens in a Life Coaching Session? A Step-by-Step Look

Every coach works differently. Here is how a session with me as a certified NLP life coach typically flows:

Step 1: Check in. The session opens with a few questions to understand where you are right now. What has happened since we last spoke? What is on your mind? What do you need from today's session? This sets the direction for everything that follows.

Step 2: Apply the TGROW model. The TGROW coaching method is a structured framework used to guide the session from your current reality toward a clear goal and forward plan. It stands for:

  • Topic - What is the focus of today's session? What is sitting on your mind that needs to come out? This is your chance to unpack your thoughts and get everything on the table.

  • Goal - What do you want? Not just in general terms, but specifically. A clear goal is far easier to reach than a vague wish. If you are unsure, your coach will help you define something specific and achievable.

  • Reality - What is actually going on right now? What is holding you back? This stage often surfaces fears, negative self-talk and limiting beliefs; the stories you tell yourself that keep you stuck. Life coaching and NLP techniques are particularly effective at shifting these.

  • Options - What have you already tried? What else could you do? This is where you explore new routes, weigh up the pros and cons of different paths and look for smarter and easier ways to get to where you want to go.

  • Way Forward - What are you going to do next? The session ends with a clear commitment to action; something you will do today, this week or this month. Accountability is built in from the start.

Step 3: Stay focused. Your coach will lead the session and keep you on track. You are encouraged to take notes. Your coach will also keep a record so that progress can be tracked across sessions.

Step 4: Ask the questions that open things up. A skilled coach asks questions that you would not typically ask yourself. They listen carefully not just to what you say but to how you say it; spotting the unhelpful patterns and the stories that are quietly running your decisions. They will call you out on your excuses with kindness and challenge you to think bigger.

Step 5: Support and honesty in equal measure. A good coach is both warm and truthful. They are there to build your confidence and your motivation, to sit with you when things feel heavy and to remind you of your capability when you forget it yourself.

Step 6: Agree your actions. You decide what you will do before the next session. This might be practical (do some research, have a difficult conversation) or personal (start a journalling practice, change how you talk to yourself). Your coach holds you accountable for following through.

The Written Exercise: What Do You Actually Want?

Open notebook with pen on a desk, next to a keyboard, mouse, coffee cup, and plant. Light, minimalistic workspace with a calm vibe.

This is one of the most important coaching questions and it is harder to answer than it sounds. Take 10 minutes with a notebook and write freely in response to these prompts:

  • What would your life look like if nothing was holding you back?

  • What would you change first if you knew you could not fail?

  • What have you been putting off that you know, deep down, you need to address?

Do not edit yourself. Do not write what sounds sensible. Write what is true. This kind of honest reflection is exactly what life coaching starts with and it often reveals more than you expect.

Why Life Coaching Works: The Psychology Behind Real Change

Life coaching is effective because it works on two levels simultaneously: the inner and the outer.

On the inner level, coaching helps you become aware of the beliefs, habits and thought patterns that are silently shaping your choices. Many of us carry deeply held stories about what we are capable of, what we deserve or what is possible for us. These stories were formed over time through experience and they feel like truth. They are not.

An experienced coach, particularly one who combines life coaching with Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques, can help you identify these patterns and replace them with something more useful. NLP works at the level of the subconscious; it changes how you process experience so that new, more empowering habits of thought can take root naturally.

On the outer level, coaching gives you structure. Goals. Accountability. A clear plan. Most people fail to reach their goals not because they lack the desire but because life gets busy, motivation fades and self-doubt creeps in without anyone to call them forward. A coach provides the external structure that keeps you moving even when momentum dips.

When you change what you believe about yourself on the inside, your behaviour changes.

When your behaviour changes, your results change. This is why coaching creates results that last.

Who Should Work with a Life Coach?

Life coaching is not just for people in crisis. It is for anyone who knows they are capable of more and wants support in getting there.

You might benefit from working with a life coach if:

  • You want to change career but feel paralysed by fear or uncertainty.

  • You have a business idea you are not acting on.

  • You find yourself in the same negative thought patterns no matter how hard you try to change.

  • You feel stuck, flat or disconnected from your own life.

  • You know what you want but lack the confidence or motivation to pursue it.

  • You keep starting things and not finishing them.

  • You want to set better boundaries, manage stress differently or create a healthier work-life balance.

  • You are going through a life transition and want support in navigating it clearly.

Life coaching is also for people who are doing well on paper but feel that something is missing; those who want more meaning, more alignment or more energy in their daily lives.

How Often Should You Have Life Coaching Sessions?

The frequency and duration of coaching is entirely personal. Some clients choose to work intensively, with weekly sessions over two months. Others prefer fortnightly sessions spread over six months or longer. Some book a year's worth of coaching and check in once or twice a month.

The most popular programme with many online life coaches is eight 60-minute sessions across a two-month period. This provides enough regularity to build momentum and enough space between sessions to put things into practice.

I also offer a very focused, one-off 90-minute coaching strategy session if you have one thing in mind and prefer not to commit to a longer term coaching relationship.

The important thing is to commit to a rhythm that works for you and to agree dates in advance. Having sessions in the diary creates momentum. It signals to yourself that this matters and that you are taking it seriously.

How Much Does Life Coaching Cost in the UK?

Life coaching session costs in the UK typically range from around £50 to £300 per hour, depending on the coach's level of experience and specialism.

As a certified online life coach and NLP Master Practitioner who has been working with clients since 2015, I charge £125 for a one-hour online session. Discounts are available when booking multiple sessions in a package, making ongoing coaching more accessible.

Payment is generally made by bank transfer, PayPal or credit card and is requested in advance of sessions.

If you want to experience coaching before committing to a full programme, a one-off strategy coaching session is also a great starting point.

What to Look for in a Good Life Coach

Not all coaches are equal and it is worth knowing what to look for before you commit to working with someone.

A credible life coach will have a recognised coaching qualification from an accredited training body. They will have real experience working with clients across a range of situations. They will be able to clearly explain their methodology and what their sessions involve. They will offer an initial call so you can assess whether you feel comfortable with them before spending any money.

Beyond credentials, the relationship matters enormously. You need to feel safe enough to be honest with your coach. You need to trust that they are both supportive and willing to challenge you. You need to feel that they genuinely understand what you are going through and what you want to create.

Read testimonials. Ask about their experience. Notice how you feel during the Discovery Call. Your gut is good data.

Summary: What Is a Life Coach and Is It Worth It?

A life coach is a trained professional who helps you get clear on what you want, understand what is getting in the way and take meaningful action toward the life you want to create. Life coaching works at the level of both mindset and behaviour. It gives you tools to shift your thinking and structure to keep you moving forward.

Sessions are conversational and focused. A good coach uses structured frameworks like the TGROW model to guide the work while remaining responsive to what you need in any given session. They listen deeply, ask powerful questions and hold you accountable to the actions you commit to.

Life coaching is not therapy and it is not consulting. It is a collaborative process in which you do the work with expert support. The results, when you are ready to engage fully, can be genuinely life-changing.

If you are stuck, ready for change or simply know that you are capable of more, working with a life coach is one of the most powerful investments you can make in yourself.
